He did not come to the advice of a friend who saved Dipak Shirsat as the tragedy of the Mumbra train developed. While ShiSat was safe, his friend Ketan Saroi died when there were passengers from two passing trains near Mumbra. Several passengers traveling on the feet of two crowded local trains fell when the trains crossed each other on a steep turn.
One of the trains was heading towards Kasar and another CHHATAPATI Shivaji Maharaj Terminus Mumbai.
Here’s what happened
Shirsat, a witness of the disaster, said he traveled with Saroj daily.
They both took the usual local train from 8:30 in the morning from Shahad. The duo, the inhabitants of Ulhasnagar in the Thane district and also colleagues, was reportedly on their way to their workplace in Airoli, Navi Mumbai, a routine they have been watching for years.
Shirsat said on Monday that Ketan stood near the train’s foot and recommended ShiSat to do the same.
According to PTI ShiSat, he said he had not given up DBem on the advice of his friend to put a crowded train near his leg, a decision that probably saved his life.
“As always, we took the same train and Ketan stood nearby. It was very hot and Ketan stood before the troop on Kalyan, where the train crowded in Wonder. When we walked a wonder, the train was packed on the edge,” Shirsat said.
“The train was crowded as usual, but I managed to slip into the coach while Ketan stood at the door,” PTI quoted him. “Passengers who are inside the coach are trying to approach the door to get fresh air, common and risky practice for overfilling,” he added.
The train stopped at Diva, where it was crowded. “Ketan, who was on the train, called me twice to stand with him at the door, but I stayed inside,” Shirsat said.
The tragic incident took place on Monday at 9:10 in the morning between Diva and Mumbra, a stretching notoriously known for its sharp curves and crowding. According to a statement of the central railway, 13 people from trains fell, four of whom died and the others were injured.
The misfortune occurred when passengers on the feet on the local train from Kasar and the like on the train heading to CHHhatparati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in Mumbai collided and fell.
“Killer” bag
Shirsat described the exact moment of the tragedy and said, “At the curvature near Mumbra, a bag that someone hanging on the foot of the train coming from the opposite direction, which was shaken against the passengers.”
“People began to fall one by one. Ketan was one of them,” he said.
The eyewitness said that passengers in the compartment pulled out an emergency chain at least three times, but the train did not stop until Thane had reached the station almost 12 km from the accident site.
“If the train stopped when we pulled out the chain, some lives could be saved,” he lamented.
