Paris Saint-Germain players celebrated wildly after they pulled out a remarkable comeback to defeat Tottenham Hotspur on the fines and raised the Super Cup for the first time in the club’s history.
The European champions fought back from 2-0 down, the remaining only five minutes left at the time of regulation to equalize the match 2-2 before won the winner of the European League 4-3 on Wednesday.
“It is incredible to win this way. This team showed the character again, although we are not the best in our best,” said PSG Marquinhos defender. “We managed to get the goals we needed through substitutions, and in the shootout we have players who take their fines well and the goalkeeper who helped us.”
Tottenham, administered by Thomas Frank in his first competitive match in charge, seemed to be preparing for the opportunity with silver after the goal from Micky van de and Cristian Romero gave them 2-0. Van de out capitalized to open the scoring while Romero headed home to double the advantage.
But the game turned on late as PSG Lee Kang-in, in the 85th minute pulled out one back with a sharp surface. The comeback was completed deep until Goncalo Ramos met Ousma Dembele Cross Cross with a diving head to be 2-2.
The match then decided on fines where Tottenham tel and van de missed their efforts. Nuno Mendes held his nerve to go home with a decisive point kick for PSG, which triggered the scenes of jubilation when players poured on the pitch.
“It’s hard to talk about this match, which we only trained for five six days, it’s incredible,” said PSG coach Luis Enrique. “It is really strange for us that we won this trophy and could offer them.”
PSG also means a historical moment for French football, and the club became the first of France to have ever lifted the UEFA Super Cup. The victory adds more feathers to their cap, only months after their strong 5-0 triumph over Inter Milan in the final of the Champions League.
