Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank has admitted he is not enjoying his time in charge just yet as the pressure mounts after a string of stunning performances and growing fan unrest.
Tottenham’s struggles were highlighted by a goalless draw with Brentford on New Year’s Day, where the traveling fans expressed their frustration by chanting “boring, boring Tottenham Hotspur”. The result contributed to the scrutiny of Frank, who took charge during a period of significant upheaval at the club.
When directly asked if he enjoyed his work, Frank was honest. “So the short answer is no,” he said. “When I step back I realize what a privilege it is to manage this fantastic club during such a big transition. I was told by someone that we have replaced eight leaders at the top of the club.
Frank stressed that the level of change at Tottenham is unprecedented. “There has never been such a big transition in 140 years,” he said. “There’s a lot of change, but the potential is huge. I know when I look back on this season, it’s going to be a big learning experience. It’s tough right now.”
The manager acknowledged the rush of work in a demanding phase. “When things are difficult and not running smoothly, it’s hard to enjoy it,” he said. “You have to put your head down and get on with it.
Tottenham’s problems were most evident in attack, where fans were unhappy with the lack of creativity and cutting edge. Against Brentford, Spurs did not register their first shot on target until the 93rd minute, reinforcing criticism of Frank’s system and the team’s attacking approach.
Frank acknowledged that improvement is needed going forward, but pointed to signs of progress at the other end of the pitch. “It’s not perfect and we want to be a loose team,” he said. “But the last two away performances have been positive defensively. Against Crystal Palace and Brentford, the fundamentals were strong and we handled the opposition’s transitions well.”
Frank is fully aware of the frustration among fans and insists he is committed to managing Tottenham in the current term. He believes the challenges now will serve the club in the long term, although he admits results and performances need to improve, particularly in attack.
