Tom Felton, best known for playing Draco Malfoy in all eight Harry Potter films, is ready to repeat his iconic role again – but this time on stage. The 37 -year -old actor announced on today’s show (June 5) that this fall debuts Broadway debut and took over the role of adult Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter and a cursed child at the Lyric Theater in New York.
The announcement date also had a special meaning for fans: June 5 is Draco Malfoy’s birthday in Harry Potter, making it a suitable opportunity for Felton’s return.
The first film actor to join the play
Felton’s Casting refers to a milestone for stage production. He will be the first actor from the original Harry Potter film series to appear in Curssed Child, which was opened on Broadway in 2018.
“It’s a very situation,” Felton said today. “I still think I dream. I let the character 16 years ago and now I have to go back to his shoes – this time as a father in a new story.”
From son to father: New Draco
19 years after the events of Harry Potter and The Hallows relic, the cursed child will explore the lives of the next generation of wizards, including Draco’s son Scorpio. Felton recognized the emotional and creative challenges of returning to the character he played during his childhood.
“The game is such an independent story from Potter’s films,” he said. “We’re not children now. Actually, we’re parents. Just like it repeats an old role for me, it’s a very pedaling on a new, unknown territory. I know it quite well as a child. I don’t know him as well as an adult. So that’s an exciting challenge for me.”
Emotional transformation
Felton shared that transformation back to Draco, especially dressing the character’s signature appearance, caused unexpected emotions.
“It is very, very easy to be emotional,” he said. “When I put my blond wig on the theater production, I immediately cried. It was just like an explosion of the past. It was something I never thought to see again.”
