The Kerala government on Thursday ordered suspension of toll collection on National Highway (NH) 66 at Nattika in Thrissur, citing the likelihood of severe traffic jams as the construction work is still incomplete.

The decision followed reports from the district collector and police that starting toll collection before the completion of the Kodungallur-Kaprikkad section could disrupt traffic and cause significant inconvenience to commuters. Several works, including the service road on the Kodungallur-Kaprikkad section and approaches to the bridges, are yet to be completed.

Public Works Minister PK Basheer directed the District Collector to convene a meeting with police officials, people’s representatives and officials of the concerned departments to assess the situation and take an appropriate decision. He also deputed the Collector to inspect the place and submit a detailed report.

The start of toll collection will be decided only after the ongoing works on the road are completed and smooth and safe traffic is ensured, the minister assured.

Earlier in the day, United Democratic Front (UDF) activists staged a blockade at the Nattika toll plaza, opposing the proposed initiation of toll collection. There was a slight skirmish between the police and the protesters who blocked the square in the morning.

The protesters demanded that the toll collection be delayed until the construction of National Highway 66 is fully completed.

Various political parties, apart from the BJP, have announced protests against the toll collection, with unfinished road work being the main point of contention. A heavy police contingent was deployed around the toll plaza in anticipation of protests.
