
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a heatwave warning for large parts of the plains of northwest, central and eastern India on April 23, a day after Odisha’s Jharsuguda recorded a maximum temperature of 44.6°C, followed by Wardha in Maharashtra at 44.2°C. Such weather conditions are likely to prevail for the next 3 to 4 days.
The IMD has issued a yellow warning for heat wave in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand and forecast extremely high temperature on April 23. Meanwhile, an orange heatwave warning has been issued for West Bengal.
Several places across the country recorded a maximum temperature of 5°C noticeably above normal on Wednesday, including Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Meghalaya, Kerala, Tripura and eastern Uttar Pradesh. Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir recorded a maximum temperature of 5.1°C above normal. The Meteorological Department urged the residents of the affected areas to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight during peak hours and take necessary precautions to protect against heat stroke.
Key areas in heatwave, hot and humid weather and warm nights
In its latest press release, the IMD said, “Heat waves are very likely over isolated areas of Punjab, Haryana Chandigarh and Delhi on 24th and 25th; West Uttar Pradesh during 23rd and 25th; East Uttar Pradesh during 22-26th; Rajasthan during 24-26-26-26th Chhattisgarh during 24-27th.” April;
According to the Meteorological Department, hot and humid weather conditions are likely in isolated areas of Odisha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam till April 26. The Gangetic West Bengal region is likely to witness similar weather conditions till April 25.
Residents of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala can expect hot and humid weather till April 24, while Gujarat will experience the kind of weather that coastal Karnataka is bracing for today in the next two days.
A weather bulletin dated April 22 said: “Warm night conditions are very likely in isolated pockets over Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi on April 23-25; Odisha between April 24-26; Konkan and Goa on April 23-25.”
What does the maximum temperature forecast say?
The weather report says that northwest India can expect a gradual rise in maximum temperatures of 3-5°C likely till April 26, followed by a gradual fall of 2-3°C on April 27-28. In addition, the IMD has suggested a gradual increase in maximum temperatures of 2-4°C likely over central India till April 26 and no significant change on April 27 and 28.
“Gradual increase in maximum temperatures of 2-3°C likely over Maharashtra till April 25 and no significant change during April 26-28… Gradual increase of maximum temperatures of 2-4°C likely over Northeast India till April 23 and no significant change,” the report added. A gradual increase in maximum temperatures of 2 to 3 °C is likely over Gujrat region between April 24 and 27.
