Tobacco Board Chairman Yashwanth Kumar C attended the World Tobacco Farmers Day organized jointly by the Federation of All India Farmers Associations (FAIFA) and the International Tobacco Growers Association (ITGA) at Chilkunda near Mysuru on Tuesday.
World Tobacco Day was celebrated under the theme “Decent Living Income for Sustainable Tobacco Production”.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Kumar praised the farmers for their hard work and said that they are the force behind India’s reputation for quality tobacco production. He said the Tobacco Board remains committed to ensuring fair tobacco prices, market stability and long-term sustainability.
Mr Kumar, who interacted with farmers at tobacco auction platforms in HD Kote, Chilkunda and Hunsur, said in a post on X: “Discussions were held on the challenges faced by tobacco farmers, their experiences and prevailing market conditions.”
Meanwhile, FAIFA highlighted that some of the world’s best Flue-Cured Virginia (FCV) tobacco was produced in Karnataka and said that disciplined farming practices and quality standards have made Indian tobacco a globally trusted brand.
Speaking on the occasion, FAIFA Joint Secretary Vikram Raj Urs said that tobacco grown in Karnataka is known worldwide for its superior quality and aroma. “Behind this success is the hardworking farmers of Mysuru, Hunsur and Chamarajnagar who defy every challenge – from unpredictable weather to rising costs – and yet never give up.”
Mr Urs used the forum to appeal to the government and policy makers to ensure “fair and transparent pricing, access to credit and crop insurance, practical and balanced tobacco regulations and recognition of the contribution of growers to the Indian economy”.
He also called for measures to curb illegal trade to protect both the legal domestic market and the interests of millions of farming families.
Mr Urs said World Tobacco Farmers Day seeks to recognize the efforts of millions of farmers who work tirelessly to produce quality leaf and support rural livelihoods.
