Joseph Vijay, a popular Tamil superstar, was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. He achieved this after his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party won a majority in the assembly elections.
Vijay’s cousins, Keerthana Sundar and Pallavi Surendar shared a heartfelt public letter expressing their pride and emotion at his political achievement. His father, filmmaker SA Chandrasekhar, was also emotional, expressing his happiness and advising Vijay to “do everything for Tamilians”.
Vijay is the first non-DMK and AIADMK leader to head the government of Tamil Nadu since 1967. His TVK party achieved this feat in its debut assembly elections, making him one of the few film stars in South India to successfully enter politics.
The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), both former allies of the DMK, have announced unconditional support to the TVK. Other parties like Congress, CPI and CPIM also extended their support.
Leading up to his political victory, Vijay dealt with personal and professional challenges. These included reports of his wife filing for divorce and speculation about his relationship with actor Trisha Krishnan, as well as delays in his latest film Jana Nayagan.
“You have come back stronger than ever. Sharper in outlook. More people centric. Not for power. Not for noise. Only for us. Only for Tamil Nadu,” they wrote.
The post described Vijay’s political success as more than a personal victory.
“A voice that unites. A journey built on trust, strength and purpose. The return is not just personal – it’s emotional for millions,” the letter added.

SA Chandrasekhar reacts to Vijay’s win
Vijay’s father, veteran filmmaker SA Chandrasekhar, also became enraged after TVK was confirmed to have won a majority.
In a video shared by ANI, the filmmaker looked teary-eyed as he reacted to his son’s political success.
“I’m happy… I’m so, so happy,” he said.

Asked by a news agency if he himself once aspired to become a political leader, Chandrasekhar denied it.
“No, no, no. I never… I do anything for my son,” he said.
The filmmaker also reacted to the widespread public support for Vijay to become the Chief Minister.
“Finally the Tamils succeeded… through Vijay,” he said.
Asked if he had any advice for his son as he stepped into the state’s highest political office, Chandrasekhar said, “Do everything for Tamilians.”
Then he folded his hands and asked to leave.

Vijay’s political rise
Vijay formally founded his political party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam in 2024. With the latest election victory, he has now become one of the few film stars in South India to successfully transition into politics within a short period of the party’s formation.
Reports have compared his rise to that of the late Telugu superstar and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, who also achieved major political success after entering public life from cinema.
However, Vijay’s political journey has unfolded along with several personal and professional events that have kept him in the headlines for the past two years.

Personal and professional challenges
The actor’s wife Sangeeta Sornalingam has reportedly filed for divorce after nearly three decades of marriage, citing infidelity in her petition. Vijay was also rumored to be in a relationship with actor Trisha Krishnan, though neither has publicly addressed the speculation.
At the same time, Vijay’s final film Jana Nayagan also faced delays. The film was initially expected to release in January, but did not hit theaters as planned due to Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) certification issues.
It is unclear when the film will finally be released.
Despite the turbulence surrounding his personal and professional life, Vijay’s political debut has now culminated in a historic victory that marks a new major chapter for the actor-turned-politician and his party in Tamil Nadu politics.
