Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) soon plans to operate three minibuses between the city of Polur on Jamunamarathur in Jawadh Hills in Tiruvannamei soon.
TNSTC officials said that only one mini-busis has been operated between Tiruvannamai and Jamunamarathur via Polur in the last seven years. Since October 2024, it has provided free bus rides.
“We sent the proposal to the State Government to introduce at least three minibuses for better connectivity. We also approved collectors K. Tharpagaraje about the problem,” Hindu official said. Unlike conventional buses, which have seat capacity 52 seats for commuting, minibuses and Ghat buses (those buses operated in hills) have only 36 seats. The life of these vehicles is also only seven years compared to 15 years of regular buses.
It is mainly because of the rough terrain in the hills.
Despite these shortcomings, TNSTC officials said they were looking for minibuses because the hills have less populations. “Free driving for women should be expanded to new mini-buses that will be presented in the hills. It will help us save our modest revenues obtained by agricultural work,” said A. Petchiammal, a tribal village resident.
