TNCCF cancels onion orders, cites poor quality
The Tamil Nadu Cooperative Consumer Federation (TNCCF) has clarified that about 400 tonnes of rotten, spoiled onions at the Korukkupet railway goods shed did not belong to it but to the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED). The TNCCF canceled orders issued for 400 tonnes of onions on 31 October 2026, saying the vegetables did not meet quality criteria, including a minimum radius of 45 mm.
As a price control mechanism, a total of 2,380.32 tonnes of onions were procured from September 3 and sold through cooperative supermarkets and 8,914 fair price shops. However, as the TNCCF officials found that the onion was of poor quality in Maharashtra, they decided to cancel the order. About 25% of the bulbs were rotten, sprouted or infected with fungus; and 50% did not meet the required size standards.
