Tamil Nadu is expected to come out with an in-depth technology policy within a month or two, Brajendra Navnit, Tamil Nadu’s minister for information technology and digital services, said on Thursday.
Speaking virtually at the inaugural Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Connect event in Coimbatore on the theme ‘Transformation to the Next Era of Intelligence’, Mr Navnit said the policy will have a big impact on the ecosystem. iTNT has recently opened regional centers in Madurai and Tiruchi and one will soon be opened in Coimbatore. The Tamil Nadu government is also considering a data exchange centre.
Government departments may explore the possibility of earmarking funds for the procurement of deep technology and artificial intelligence (AI) products and services. India generates huge data but processes very little of it. “We can turn data into a new raw material,” he muttered to his address.
S. Krishnan, Secretary, Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), said that as part of India’s AI mission, the central government is partnering with private players to provide high-end GPUs at an affordable price. MeitY works with NASSCOM, states and other organizations to train and skill people in AI. It has created a dataset platform and currently has more than 3,000 datasets. These can be used to develop applications. MeitY has received 29 proposals from states to set up centers of excellence for artificial intelligence, including one from Tamil Nadu. “We’re happy to support it,” he said. He called on KII to enable SMEs to use AI. MeitY is cooperating with the Ministry of MSME in this regard, he added/
Mahadesha V, director, Software Technology Parks of India, Chennai, said more than 50% of the more than 1,000 startups at STPI’s 24 centers of excellence use artificial intelligence. It’s time to harness the potential of AI, he said.
J. Murugavel, chairman of CII Connect 2025, said Coimbatore is emerging as an innovation hub and more than 400 delegates are participating in the two-day event.
