The native of Tamil Nadu died, reportedly in police custody, at the Thrikkakara police station early on Saturday (January 24, 2026). The deceased is Baburaj, 50, a native of Avalloor in Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu.
He was reportedly taken into preventive custody on Friday (January 23, 2026) around 10.45 pm after residents alerted the police that he was found under suspicious circumstances at Chembumukku in Vazhakkala.
The police registered a case under Section 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which allows arrest without a warrant to prevent the commission of cognizable offences, after a medical examination at the Thrikkakara Municipal Cooperative Hospital.
After being brought to the station, at around 2.50am, Baburaj reportedly showed symptoms of epilepsy and was rushed back to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. A case has been registered under Section 194 (unnatural death) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and investigation is on.
“Baburaj had been in Kakkanad for more than 15 years, doing odd jobs and had no criminal record. His son and a relative came to the police station after being informed about his death. We have shown CCTV footage from the police station since he was brought in,” said Vijayan TB, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Thrikkakara. He added that an autopsy will be conducted on Sunday (January 25, 2026).
