
The Government of Tamil Nadu has set up a Waqf Tribunal in Coimbatore. He would handle Waqf related cases in Coimbatore, Dharmapuri, Erode, Namakkal, Salem, Nilgiris and Tiruppur. According to the UMEED Act 1995, the tribunal should have a chairman and two members.
The presiding judge may be a serving or former district judge. While one member may be or was an equivalent officer of the rank of Joint Secretary to the State Government, the other member is one who has knowledge of Muslim law and jurisprudence.
In January this year, while addressing the State Conference of Mahalla Jamaats, the Chief Minister announced that apart from the Waqf Tribunals in Chennai and Madurai, another one would be set up in Coimbatore district.
