With the Congress Central Election Committee yet to meet, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) ticket aspirants are gearing up to file last-minute nominations in 28 constituencies in Tamil Nadu.
Senior TNCC members said factors such as the unavailability of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, an important decision-maker who is detained in the final stages of the campaign in Kerala, delayed the announcement of candidates.
In addition, senior officials identified serious problems in the ticket distribution and seat selection process.
“The leadership feels that we have seats where we cannot find credible candidates who can fight and win the elections. There is also the issue of claims by Congress MPs and others that the seats are being distributed in a non-transparent manner, which has been brought to the notice of the leadership. That is why there are delays,” said a senior leader.
Another TNCC leader, who is likely to contest the upcoming elections, said the list of candidates would be released by Thursday at the latest as “there is no time to prepare and submit nomination papers”.
