The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Monday (January 19, 2026) welcomed the Supreme Court’s intervention ordering the Election Commission of India (ECI) to publish the list of people to whom notices have been issued, citing “logical inconsistencies” in the enumeration forms they submitted during the ongoing Special Intensive Review (SIR) in West Bengal.
During the last one month, after the first phase of SIR in West Bengal, the ECI has issued about 1.36 lakh notices for “logical irregularities”, but the Commission has not disclosed the list of those to whom the notices have been issued.

The Supreme Court on Monday (January 19) also instructed the ECI to provide clear guidelines for submission of documents and objections and asked the West Bengal government to provide adequate manpower for the process.
“The SC has rightly ordered that the names of those who are arbitrarily slapped with the vague, ominous label of ‘logical mismatch’ must be made public. The BJP-ECI combine has been exposed for the Bangladeshi birodhi zamindars (landlords against the people of Bangladesh) that they are,” Trinamool Congress posted on social media.
TMC General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee also appreciated the development. “BJP’s game of SIR is over. This is a victory for ma (mother), maati (land), manush (man) and the people of Bengal. Those who wanted to take away the fundamental right to vote from the people of Bengal, this is a slap in the face from the Supreme Court to both,” Banerjee said at a public meeting on Monday, January 19.

The Trinamool Congress leader also added that he “defeated them (BJP) judicially and will defeat them in the elections (in the assembly elections) in April”.
The Supreme Court also said that the list of unmapped voters must be made public, the TMC said in its social media post, and “BLAs (booth-level agents nominated by political parties) can attend the hearing,… Madhyamik admits cards accepted as valid identity proof and written confirmations issued to every voter summoned”. ECI refused to allow voters to use Admit Card of Madhyamik (Class X Board) exams as valid document for SIR process.
In her fifth letter to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on January 12, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee pointed out that many genuine voters were misclassified in “logical contradictions”. Her government moves Supreme Court over ‘logical contradictions’, Ms Banerjee.
Some prominent personalities of the state, including Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, actor and Trinamool Congress MP Dev, several Trinamool Congress MLAs and former Rajya Sabha MP and BJP leader Swapan Dasgupta, have been served notices to appear before the ECI under the “logical irregularities” category.
