Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy on Tuesday threatened to file a privilege motion against Barasat MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar – who heads the dissident faction of the TMC that merged with the Nationalist Civic Party of India this week – for violating the parliamentary norm of not disclosing the proceedings of a parliamentary standing committee.

At the conclusion of the Standing Committee on Home Affairs, which discussed crimes against children, Ms Dastidar spoke to the media and criticized her former party’s 15-year rule in the state for failing to check child trafficking and other crimes against children.

“Child marriage is very widespread in West Bengal and the previous government did not take adequate steps to stop it. Child trafficking is also very high there and young girls are sent outside the country,” she said. She added that she had asked the Union Home Ministry officials what action would be taken in this regard and also what punishment would be given to those involved in child abuse or child marriage.

Mr Roy, who has been an MP since 1977, accused Ms Dastidar of being oblivious to parliamentary rules.

“We are surprised that the four-time MP, who has now claimed to have aligned himself with the Rooster and Bull party, is ignorant of parliamentary procedures. The disclosure of details of a parliamentary standing committee meeting is grounds for a privilege motion against an MP,” Mr Roy said.
