
Tihar prison will move: Tihar Jail, the largest prison complex in South Asia, is to be moved to the edge of the national capital. In her budget speech on March 25, the main Minister Delhi Rekha Gupt announced plans to move Tihar prison to the edge of the city.
The main minister, who is also the Minister of Finance in Delhi, postponed aside £10 Crore in budget 2025-26 for reconnaissance and consulting services related to prison.

“In order to endure the current prison complex Tihar for the welfare of prisoners, a new scheme was created for the development of the new prison complex by shifting the existing Tihar prison complex to another place,” said Chief Minister Delhi at the presentation of the budget in the Assembly.
Gupta submitted the government of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) £1 lakh crore budget for this financial year. BJP returned to power in Delhi after a gap of 27 years in the elections to the assembly in February.
What is Tihar’s prison history?
Tihar Jail, founded in 1958, was supposed to be a prison, officially known as Tihar Prision, originally was to be a small prison in TiHar near Delhi. The aim was to accommodate convicts from the area of Delhi because the prison infrastructure at that time was insufficient. The prison worked under the administrative control of the Punjab, although it was geographically located in Delhi.

Today Tihar is one of the largest Indian prison complexes, which consist of nine prisons spread over 400 acres – one prison in Rohini and six Mandoli prisons.
Tihar is located in western Delhi and is near the area of Tilak Nagar and Hari Nagar in the city. Originally designed to accommodate approximately 10,025 prisoners, it currently holds more than 19,000, leading to crowding and security challenges. The Dilli government has started the development of new prison complexes in Narel to alleviate overload.

Prison numbers 1 to 9 are designed to accommodate approximately 5,000 prisoners, but currently adapt to more than 12,000 prisoners, the source said.
