Thunderstorms, rain and heatwave are likely to prevail in AP for three more days

Prevailing mixed weather with thunderstorms, rainfall and heat waves is likely to continue in Andhra Pradesh for the next three days, Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) Executive Director Prakhar Jain said on Friday.

In a statement, Mr Jain said light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely to occur at isolated places in Polavaram, East Godavari, Eluru, Krishna, NTR, Guntur, Palnadu, Markapuram, Kurnool and Nandyal districts on Saturday. Light rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is also expected at isolated places in the remaining districts.

APSDMA advised the public not to hide under trees, power poles or piles during thunderstorms. Farmers and cattle herders have been urged to remain extra vigilant and move to safe places immediately when skies darken and thunder is heard.

People were also warned to watch out for and keep a safe distance from downed power lines caused by strong winds.

Mr. Jain said severe heat wave is likely in 56 mandals on Saturday while heat wave is expected in 51 mandals, taking the total number of affected mandals to 107. Districts expected to experience severe heat wave include Srikakulam (11 mandals), Vizianagaram (20 mandals), Parvathipuram (20 mandals), Parvathipuram (Alluri Rajuri Sharonesma (1) Polavaram (two mandals) and Kakinada (eight mandals).

Temperatures may range between 42°C and 44°C in parts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Parvathipuram-Manyam, Alluri Sitharama Raju, Polavaram and Kakinada districts, while a record 40°C and 42°C is expected in parts of Anakapalli, Konaseema, East Godavari, West Godavari, Eluru, Krishna, Gushna district and NTR, Bapatnad, NTR.

The highest temperatures recorded on Friday were 44.6 °C at Gudur in Nellore district, Tanuku in West Godavari district (43.7 °C), Piduguralla in Palnadu district (43.3 °C), Kanumolu in Krishna district and Salur (43.1 °C), Karedu in Prakasam district (43 °C), C Rajagaram Rajam in Ana Vizian district (43 °C), Rajagaram Rajam in Ana district Vizian district. (42.6 °C) and Pittalavanipalem in Bapatla district, Narayanapuram in Eluru district and Poolathota in Tirupati district (42.3 °C.)

Due to the intense heat, the APSDMA has advised people to take necessary precautions. Special attention should be paid to the elderly, pregnant women and nursing mothers.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Amaravati, has predicted that the state is expected to experience mixed weather conditions with heat waves gradually giving way to thunderstorms, strong winds and localized heavy rainfall in several areas.
