Thrissur has achieved a historic milestone by becoming completely free from extreme poverty, a culmination of four-and-a-half years of targeted social welfare initiatives by the state government. Revenue Minister K. Rajan made the official announcement at an event here on Friday (October 24, 2025).
“Kerala has become the first extreme poverty-free state in the country. Through Kudumbashree, 64,006 extremely poor families have been identified across the state and all of them have now been lifted out of extreme poverty. This achievement is proof that any goal can be realized with persistent and collective efforts,” the minister said. He also appreciated the dedicated work of Kudumbashree volunteers and officials who played a crucial role in every phase of the project – from identification to rehabilitation.
Higher Education and Social Justice Minister R. Bindu, who presided over the function, said that ‘Poverty Free Kerala’ has become a new model of development for the world to look up to. “By providing food, shelter, land, education, employment and basic services to the needy, the state has taken a decisive step towards building a socially just and inclusive society,” she added.
A total of 5,013 families in Thrissur district have now been officially declared free from extreme poverty. According to an official report submitted on October 15, the district has achieved 100% success in all four key indicators of deprivation – food, health, income and housing – ensuring that no one is left behind. The report said 1,022 people received food assistance, 2,535 received health care, 389 people were provided with income-generating opportunities and 1,112 people were provided with proper housing.
