Three traffic police officers at High Grounds police station have been suspended for allegedly extorting bribes from motorists after deliberately switching off their body cameras while on duty.
The action was taken by Anoop Shetty, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic West), following an internal investigation into numerous complaints from the public.
The suspended employees have been identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector Suresh G. and Police Constables Prashanth K. and Sadik SB
Charges and Violations
According to officials, the trio was deployed near the busy Chalukya Circle where they allegedly stopped vehicles without visible traffic violations, deliberately switched off their body-worn cameras and illegally collected money from motorists.
According to officials, complaints from commuters indicated harassment and illegal cash withdrawal under the pretext of traffic control.
Investigation findings
Based on the complaints, the department launched an internal investigation that confirmed misconduct and dereliction of duty by staff. Based on the established facts, all three were suspended as part of disciplinary proceedings.
Senior officers said body cameras have been introduced to ensure transparency and accountability in enforcement of traffic rules. The suspension serves as a strong warning to staff against abuse of authority.
Police urged citizens to report any incidents of bribery or harassment by transport workers.
