Three people were killed when a truck carrying coconuts fell into a canal between Donepudi and Kotipalli villages in Kolluru mandal of Bapatla district on Friday afternoon.
District Superintendent of Police B. Umamaheswar said the accident occurred around 1.30 pm when a group from Chintamotu village of Bhattiprolu mandal was transporting coconuts loaded from Kolluru Mandal villages in Lanka (island) to Cherukupalli.
The vehicle reportedly went out of control and fell into a road canal. There were three people in the cab at the time of the incident, while four were sitting on the vehicle.
The deceased have been identified as Chatragadda Kanta Rao, 50, and Pesarlanka Srinivasa Rao, 55, both of Chintamot, and Sheikh Ismail, 60, of Vellatur. Three people were injured. The police shifted the injured to the Tenali Government Hospital, the SP said, adding that a detailed investigation was underway.
He noted that nine special teams have been formed to monitor compliance with road safety rules on national highways.
