‘This is for me’: Michael Chandler at UFC Freedom 250, fighting in the White House and betting on himself
Michael Chandler (Image credit: Instagram) Michael Chandler is no stranger to the spotlight. Long before he arrived in the UFC and established himself as one of the lightweight attractions, the Missouri native built his reputation in Bellator, where he became a three-time champion and one of the faces of the promotion. Championships, title fights and blockbuster opponents accompanied much of his illustrious career. But on Sunday, Chandler finds himself on the brink of something unlike anything mixed martial arts has ever seen. Taking place against the backdrop of the White House, UFC Freedom 250 carries the proverbial air of a big fight. The significance of the occasion and the scale of the card made it one of the most anticipated events in UFC history. For Chandler, as much as it’s about representing his country, it’s also deeply personal.“Obviously, living and growing up in America, we idolize sports stars and idolize those who entertain us. We want to be like those who come before us and represent our country in so many different ways, whether it’s the Olympics or professional sports.” “I really felt it when I put on the UFC fight kit – top and bottoms, jacket and pants. It’s a deep navy blue with red, white and blue stars and stripes. It almost felt like the opening ceremony of the Olympics when everyone came out in those amazing outfits.”“It’s a huge blessing for me to represent this country on this historic card. It’s a dream come true. I always say, ‘See you at the top.’ I’m not quite sure where the pinnacle is, whether it’s the gold, the championship or my name in bright lights. But this is the highlight for now – the fight on the White House lawn,” Chandler told TimesofIndia.com in an exclusive interaction ahead of UFC Freedom 250.
He’s chasing his own version of the top
The comparison with the Olympics is perhaps natural.Chandler was an outstanding collegiate wrestler, and like many wrestlers coming through the US system, dreams of representing the country on the biggest stage are never too far away. In many ways, the Freedom 250 seems to evoke similar emotions.“It’s a dream come true. I always say, ‘See you at the top.’ I’m not quite sure where the pinnacle is, whether it’s the gold, the championship or my name in bright lights. But this is the highlight for now – the fight on the White House lawn,” he said, almost beaming with pride.Chandler had highs and painful lows. Since moving from Bellator to the UFC, he has shared the cage with Charles Oliveira, Justin Gaethje, Dustin Poirier and Paddy Pimblett, producing spectacular moments and suffering equally painful setbacks. Still, there is little to deny his status as one of the sport’s true attractions.Chandler trains at Kill Cliff FC in Florida and enters Sunday with all the weight and size that comes with such an occasion.Still, the veteran insists that the fight against Mauricio Ruffy is not about ratings, the title or proving people wrong. His answer to the question of whether the symbolism of the White House creates additional pressure was simple.“You’d probably think, ‘Look, this guy is a red, white, and blue-blooded American. He loves this country and he loves being an American.’ And that’s not to downplay my love for America, my love for the UFC, or my love for my family.“But all of that aside, this is for me. I deserve to go out there and win for myself, raise my hand for myself. I’ve earned it. I deserve it and I deserve to be successful.”“Without sounding selfish or narcissistic, that’s the mentality I bring to this. When the octagon door closes, I’ll be wearing red, white and blue. It’s America’s birthday, but I’m excited to go out and perform for myself.”
Challenge called Mauricio Ruffy
Opposite him will be Mauricio Ruffy, one of the division’s rising names and a dangerous striker who has quickly risen through the ranks. The Brazilian’s counter-attacking ability has made him one of the most exciting prospects in the division, and Chandler knows the challenge ahead of him.“He’s a good offensive striker, but also a very good reactive counter-striker. So it’s going to take a lot of navigation and negotiation: managing distance, footwork, angles, knowing when to apply pressure and when to back off a bit.”“I’m not very good at retreating. I’m not very good at not moving forward, as you’ve seen in my past performances. But even if I give him some breathing room, he’ll always feel my presence and my pressure.”Over the years, Chandler has earned a reputation for chaos, spectacular exchanges, and wild swings. Which is why one question naturally followed: how does he separate controlled aggression from plain “absolute insanity”?“I’ve gotten to a point where I’m confident in my ability to go deep. I’m confident in my ability to be violent, chaotic and push the pace. But I’m also confident in my ability to put together a game plan that will pick me up, whether it’s knocking him down, choking him, choking him on the ground or just making him look for an exit. “In any case, I’ll keep my foot on the gas. He’ll feel my pressure immediately and I’m sure I’ll make it to the finish line.”
Relevance, momentum and unfinished business
And should he raise his hand, Chandler believes he’s one fight away from relevance.“This sport is all about momentum and ‘What have you done for me lately?’“You have to win, but you have to win in a way that gets people’s attention. I’m damn good at it.”“And with a win on the White House lawn, the biggest stage we’ve ever seen in combat sports, my name will be in that hat.”So naturally, one eye will be Ilia Topuria versus Justin Gaethje. Another one may still linger on Conor McGregor. The rivalry between Chandler and the Irishman has been going on for years. They trained opposite each other on The Ultimate Fighter, shared heated exchanges and were once seemingly destined to fight, only for delays and uncertainty to repeatedly derail plans.“There will always be a connection between Conor and I because of The Ultimate Fighter and because of the fight that was supposed to happen but didn’t happen. There’s animosity, shoving, verbal sparring, but also mutual respect.”“He wants to fight me. I’ve talked publicly about wanting to fight him. We’ve got to get him, me and the UFC all on board.”“It’s something that I hold onto, but I hold onto it very loosely. If it never happens, I can lay my head on the pillow at night knowing that I gave my absolute best effort to make the fight happen.”
A gamble that still drives him
As the Freedom 250 approaches, with stars like Alex Pereira, Cyril Gane and Derrick Lewis adding to the spectacle, Chandler finds himself reflecting on the gamble that brought him here.“I had a lot of security outside of the UFC. I could have stayed with Bellator for a very long time. I took a chance on myself. I bet on myself. I came in, faced the unknown and kicked the door down to lightweight.“When I’m out there fighting, you can feel that there’s a different type of passion with the way I compete. I put my full self into every performance because I prepare so well and because I care so much.”“Whether you’re a lifelong fan or completely new to the sport, you’ll see a great representation of being a great steward of your gifts and a great steward of the sport.”At 40, Michael Chandler is still betting on himself. And standing on the White House lawn, on what he calls the biggest stage of his career, the American believes he has reached his own version of the pinnacle.Watch UFC Freedom 250 – Topuria vs. Gaethje 15 June 2026 at 5:30 AM on Sony Sports Ten 1 SD & HD, Sony Sports Ten 2 SD & HD, Sony Sports Ten 3 SD & HD (Hindi), Sony Sports Ten 4 SD (Tamil, Telugu and Kannada)
