Thiruvananthapuram Corporation has developed a project to remove overhead cables and telephone/internet wires which have been run unscientifically.

The demand to remove such cables was raised through a resolution passed by the board of the company earlier. Since the cables, which have led to many accidents and even loss of life, were not removed, the civic body has decided to remove them itself and demand compensation from the service providers, a statement said here on Saturday.

The plan was prepared in a meeting chaired by Standing Committee on Town Planning Pattoor Radhakrishnan. The meeting was attended by corporate councillors, government department officials, service providers and franchisees.

Contractors will cut and remove any cables that have not been tagged and clean the rest together using machines.

The project will be implemented in 101 departments, with five departments selected for the first phase. They are Palayam, Fort, Kannammoola, Thycaud and Perunthanni.

Such a mission has been successfully completed only in Varanasi and Mumbai in the country, the statement said.

Mayor VV Rajesh will inaugurate the project on Monday at 5 pm. Deputy Mayor Asha Nath GS will preside.
