
As many as 30 Sabarimala pilgrims were injured when two KSRTC buses collided head-on at Chakkupalam near Pampa on Tuesday (December 9, 2025).
According to the police, a fast passenger bus heading from Chengannur to Pampa collided with another bus going towards Nilackal. Both buses were overcrowded at the time of the accident. One bus was carrying 48 passengers, including several Sabarimala pilgrims, while the other had 45 people on board. Since the accident occurred during the midday shift of service, several KSRTC employees were also traveling in the buses.
The impact was severe, one side of the KSRTC bus was completely damaged.
Nine of those who sustained serious injuries, including a 10-year-old child, were taken to Kottayam Government Medical College Hospital. The remaining injured passengers are being treated at hospitals in Pampa and Nilackal.
Police and rescue teams arrived at the scene and after moving the vehicles off the road, traffic on the route was resumed. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.
