Kolkata Metro services were suspended on Tuesday following a suicide attempt in one of its corridors, the third such incident in a week.
According to a report by news agency PTI, the incident took place at 11:31 am on Tuesday when a passenger jumped onto the tracks as the train was approaching. However, the report did not specify at which station the incident occurred.
The suicide attempt affected services on the Blue Line, which connects Dakshineswar and Garia areas on the northern and southern outskirts of the city.
The disruption lasted for about 40 minutes and affected the section between Dakshineswar and Sobhabazar stations.
Normal service on the Blue Line resumed at 12:11 a.m. Tuesday, a Metro official said.
Tuesday’s incident comes days after another suicide attempt disrupted services on the same Blue Line.
The incident took place on Saturday when a commuter tried to take his own life at Mahatma Gandhi Road station, disrupting services from Belgachi to Park Street.
“Due to the suicide attempt at Mahatma Gandhi station, Metro services on Blue Line between Dakshineswar and Dum Dum stations and Majdan and Shahid Khudiram stations are currently available,” an alert on the Kolkata Metro app said on Saturday afternoon.
Although the man was lifted from the dormitory, he was declared dead, police at the Calcutta Medical College said.
Saturday’s incident followed another suicide attempt on Thursday, when services were affected for almost an hour in the afternoon after an elderly man tried to kill himself by jumping onto the tracks at Netaji station around 3.10 pm.
Normal service resumed on Thursday after a 55-minute break at 4:05 p.m.
The elderly man who jumped also succumbed to his injuries in hospital, police said.
