Standing outside the indoor hall of Nandini Nagar Mahavidyalaya on Monday afternoon was three-time Olympian and two-time World Championship medalist Vinesh Phogat, who came out of retirement and walked straight into the stronghold of former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brije Bhushan Sharan Singh. But the comeback never officially started. Despite arriving at the venue with husband Somvir Rathe, bodyguards, former protest associates and around 50 supporters, Vinesh was denied entry to the Nandini Nagar Mahavidyalaya complex in Nawabganj, the venue of the three-day meeting.

Why Suryakumar Yadav Will Lose India T20I Captaincy: Everything You Need To Know“What do you expect from me? Will I accept defeat? Will I take sanyaas and stay away? For their plot against me to succeed? They won’t allow me to do that. They want to see me tired and retired. All I ask is a fair chance to compete, but they insist that I have to answer their notice first. It’s all a conspiracy,” she said after meeting WFI officials.Vinesh, who publicly identified herself as one of the six wrestlers who accused Brij Bhushan of sexual harassment during the 2023 Jantar Mantar protests, announced the national open ladder event as a launch pad for her return to the Los Angeles Olympics.Vinesh also dismissed allegations that her comeback bid is “politically motivated”. “You call me ‘tukde tukde gang’ so who are you (referring to Singh and WFI)?” I have dedicated 20 years to Indian wrestling. I gave my heart and soul to this sport. Athletes are under psychological pressure. I don’t feel safe in this environment. They want me to retire so that their plot will succeed,” she alleged. But the WFI remained unmoved. “On five points, the WFI has warned her. Until she responds to the allegations, we will not let her participate. She remains suspended for this tournament,” WFI president Sanjay Singh said.In the registration hall, Vinesh tried to complete the physical verification of her weight category but was denied permission to proceed. She also later claimed that she was prevented from training in the indoor wrestling hall inside the complex. However, federation officials said they were not aware of any such denial. The federation insisted that disciplinary proceedings against her were still pending and that she remained suspended from domestic competition until 26 June 2026. However, Vinesh insisted that she had complied with all anti-doping and procedural requirements mandated by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and United World Wrestling (UWW).“I received the notice on Saturday and I didn’t have enough time to respond properly because I was preparing for the competition and cutting weight. They gave me 14 days to submit a detailed answer, which I will definitely give. But my request was not to prevent me from competing during this period.”The confrontation further escalated when Vinesh posted on social media on 3 July 2025 a confidential communication from the International Testing Agency (ITA), which handles anti-doping processes for the UWW. An email sent by probation officer Estelle Daloz made it clear that he could return to competition from January 1, 2026.“I got written permission from the ITA to compete from January 1, 2026. If I broke any rule, then the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) would give me a show cause warning. Or they would ban me. Or WADA would give me a show cause notice. I missed one residence. And there are three of them. I apologized at that time. I even became a mother. I even became a mother. I became a mother. WADA gave me a clean bill for that They told me I can participate in any international event,” she added.TOI had earlier reported that Vinesh had followed the return procedures laid down by the UWW and WADA and submitted her return to competition document as early as June 2025. The wrestler revealed that she has already undergone two anti-doping tests since announcing her return on December 18, 2025 and cleared both. The federation later issued a statement saying that Vinesh was provided with full security from the moment she arrived at the tournament venue. “As testified by all present, she met with officials and was informed of her ineligibility to participate in accordance with applicable rules and procedures. She freely interacted with the media and was not stopped or disturbed anywhere, then left the venue peacefully. From her arrival in Gonda to her departure from the venue, complete security and support was provided at every step,” the statement said.PTI adds: Looking for a place to train ahead of the women’s weigh-ins scheduled for Monday between 5pm and 7pm, Vinesh looked for a warm-up spot inside the venue but found it locked. “Ab training bhi nahi kar sakti kya? Lock toh khulwa do kam se kam (I can’t even train now. At least open the lock),” she said in frustration. She then moved to the SAI Khelo India Center hoping to find mats to train on, but there were none available there either.“We are trying in every way but they won’t let me wrestle. I came and put my life and mind on the line,” she said before leaving the venue.Despite the setback, Vinesh maintained that she would continue to fight. “I work hard honestly and truthfully. God knows I am clean. If I am right, he will give me strength. We will fight for our rights,” she said. It is learned that Vinesh, Rathee and her team left for Delhi after taking a late evening flight from Lucknow.
