‘They both wanted to fight, but when it came to money…’: Trump again claims he stopped India-Pakistan war, but adds a new twist | Today’s news

February 20, 2026

United States President Donald Trump on Thursday reiterated that he mediated between India and Pakistan during a military dispute in May 2025. He claimed that “they both wanted to fight. But when it comes to money, it’s nothing like money. When a lot of money was lost, they said, I think we don’t want to fight…”

At his Board of Peace event on Thursday, February 19, Trump repeated his claim that 11 jets were also shot down.

Since May 2025, Trump has repeatedly claimed to have stopped the India-Pakistan conflict. Meanwhile, New Delhi has on several occasions rejected any third-party mediation in the matter.

What Trump claimed at the Board of Peace event

It’s not just about claims to have stopped the India-Pakistan conflict or the number of planes shot down – Trump went on to claim that the US will not engage in any trade deal with either nation unless the conflict is resolved.

“…He (Pakistani Prime Minister) said in front of our Chief of Staff that President Trump saved 25 million lives when he stopped the war between us and India…The war was raging. Planes were being shot down. And I was on the phone with both of them and I knew them a little bit. I knew Prime Minister Modi very well…I called them and said listen, I’m not going to fix these trade deals with you guys. We agreed, I said, if you fight, I’m going to put 200 percent tariffs on every one of your countries,” the US president said at an event on Thursday.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif attended the event along with leaders of other countries that signed up to the Trump-led organization.

Addressing the event, Trump listed the conflicts he helped end and asked the leaders of the countries to stand when he mentioned the nations, PTI reported.

First meeting of Trump’s Peace Council

The first meeting of the Peace Council takes place today, Thursday, at the Donald J. Trump US Institute of Peace in Washington.

The meeting brought together 40 countries for high-level discussions focused on the ongoing crisis in Gaza.

The agenda of the Peace Council meeting is focused on the restructuring of Gaza – the Palestinian territory decimated by Israel since the October 7 attacks by Hamas.

Donald Trump delivered a keynote speech in which he announced that up to nine countries had pledged $7 billion in aid to Gaza.
