
The main new survey shows that the United States is considered the most important allies of people in 15 countries, but also considered the greatest threat to those in eight countries.
The Pew Research Center asked 31,938 adults in 25 countries to name the highest allies and the greatest threats of their nation without proposing the selection. Israel showed the strongest American support with 95%of the names of America as their main ally, followed by Japan (78%) and South Korea (89%).
Canada and Mexico show a sharp increase when looking at us as a threat since 2019
However, the neighbors of Canada and Mexico rank their primary threat (59% and 68%), while paradoxically they also call their best ally (55% and 37%).
Canada’s view of the US as a threat has almost tripled since 2019 and jumped from 20% to 59%, while Mexico’s perception increased from 56% to 68%. This increase is governed by recent business tension and political rhetoric.
Argentina, Brazil and Kenya also show this dual view and name the highest allies’ America and the highest threats. Meanwhile, Europeans mostly see Russia as its primary threat, with most in Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden and the UK name Moscow. Spain uniquely connects the US and Russia as the same threats.
Regional threat patterns:
- Asia-Pacifik: Half Australians and Japanese sees China as their greatest threat, while South Koreans primarily fear North Korea (40%) followed by China (33%).
- Middle East: 52% of the Israelis names Iran as its highest threat, while 43% of the Turks consider Israel its greatest danger – a dramatic increase of 10% in 2019.
- American perspectives: Americans rank China (42%) and Russia (25%) as the highest threat, while the Republicans feared China (58%) and democrats who worry more about Russia (39%).
Worldwide, the US is largely considered to be an economic threat than a security danger. More than 75% of Canadians who consider America to be a threat to economic risks, while Europeans consider Russia a security threat.
It observes the views of political ideology: individuals leaning on the left more often consider the US to be a threat, while respondents who lean are more often called China.
Supporters of right -wing European parties are significantly considered an ally as an ally.
