
Tension reigned briefly outside the taluk hospital in Sindhanur town of Raichur district on Tuesday when angry family members of the dead woman staged a flash protest with the body in a wheelchair on the Sindhanur-Ballari main road.
According to sources, 80-year-old Sangamma Shivanna, who was reportedly suffering from respiratory problems, was shifted to the taluk hospital from Mudgal town for further treatment.
“The patient died on her bed due to delay in care and provision of immediate and necessary treatment,” family members said. They alleged that the woman’s death was the result of medical negligence.
Due to the flash protest, the traffic was interrupted for a while.
After learning about the incident, the police rushed to the spot.
The angry family members were seen in a heated argument with the police. However, after discussing the situation with the doctors, senior police officers tried to pacify them.
Interviewing family members at the hospital, Chief Medical Officer Suresh Gowda explained the patient’s condition and denied any medical negligence.
Meanwhile, RDCC Bank director Pampanagouda Badarli, who rushed to the hospital, pacified the family members. Later, the body was taken away from the place.
Dr. Speaking to The Hindu, Suresh Gowda denied any medical negligence. He said the patient was in critical condition on arrival as she was having trouble breathing. The doctors on duty provided nebulization treatment. However, the patient died of cardiac arrest.
He said he had a long history of medical treatment for his heart conditions. He added that doctors were busy treating patients in the ICU when the patient was brought to the hospital. However, the woman was attended to and treated, with no medical malpractice as alleged.
