Petroleum Minister Hardeep Puri on Friday said there was no power shortage in India and its consumers had no reason to worry.
The minister discussed various aspects of India’s uninterrupted power imports despite geopolitical challenges with the media.
“Our priority is to ensure availability of affordable and sustainable fuel to our citizens and we are doing so comfortably. There is no shortage of energy in India and our energy consumers have no reason to worry,” the minister wrote on X.
Indian Oil Corporation has rubbished reports on social media suggesting a shortage of petrol and diesel, calling them baseless.
“India has adequate fuel reserves and supply and distribution networks are functioning normally. IndianOil is committed to maintaining uninterrupted fuel supply across the country. We request citizens not to panic and overcrowd gas stations and rely only on official sources for accurate information,” IndianOil wrote on X.
Earlier today, government sources said India is in a “very comfortable position” in terms of crude oil, petroleum products and LPG supplies, despite concerns over disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the sources, the country currently has access to more energy supplies from diversified sources than the Strait of Hormuz could potentially affect. India’s existing reserves of crude oil and petroleum products are also sufficient to meet domestic demand.
Sources said the government is closely monitoring the situation and plans to increase supplies from alternative geographies to offset any potential supply constraints associated with the Strait of Hormuz.
They pointed out that India has significantly diversified its oil import basket in the last few years. From 2022, India will import oil from Russia. While Russia accounted for only 0.2 percent of India’s total oil imports in 2022, this share has grown significantly in subsequent years.
“In February, India imported about 20 percent of its total oil imports from Russia, which is around 1.04 million barrels per day,” government sources said.
Regarding LPG, the government has directed all LPG refineries to increase production to ensure adequate availability across the country. Officials said India currently remains in a comfortable position in terms of LPG stocks.
LPG from the US started arriving in India from January, sources said. Indian oil companies PSUs signed an annual contract in November 2025 to import approximately 2.2 MTPA of LPG from the US Gulf Coast for the contract year 2026.
