In an effort to use a source from the fifth drinking water tank in Chennai, Therervoy Kandigai-Kannankottai and strengthen water supply, Chennai Metrowater began to develop infrastructure, including the laying of water hills pipes into red hills where water is treated in the city.
In 2020, the tank was started in the Truvallur district, stored primarily for the needs of the city. With the ability to store about 500 million cubic feet (MCFT), the tank now has a storage of almost 271 MCFT.
Recently, the water agency began to work on the water transfer from the tank to the Red Hills water treatment plant to use the source to satisfy the growing needs of the city. So far, almost 15% of the project of 30.59 GBP has been completed. The work has gained importance, especially because more inhabitants in merged areas are covered with any network.
Currently, Chennai is provided 1,099.96 million liters of water per day (bill). Of this, the inhabitants in the city give almost 1,048 billion and merged through pipes and tankers. The city obtains the main part of water supply from the tanks in Chembarambakamam, Red Hills and Poe.
Metrowater officials said that the work is under construction on the construction of another pump house, which would have the ability to draw 66 billion on the premises of Tervoykandigai Reservoir. Improvements are made in the existing petrol houses in Kannigaiper and Red Hills to allow smooth flow of water.
From a distance of 43.35 km, which is to be covered from the reservoir to Red Hills, there is a work on laying a new pipe covering almost 3.8 km and improving the existing line. Water pumped and treated in 300 billion Red Hills would be associated with a common distribution network that covers various areas of the north, south and central parts of Chennai, the officials said.
The project is expected to be completed by January 2026. The horizon was created as a leveling tank to store excess water and provide it during high demand. It is located 14 km from Uhukottai, the interstate limit of Kandaler Poondi Canal, Thervoykandigai Reservoir is filled with flood water drainage and surplus Krishn Water from Andr Pradesh. Currently, Krishna water is transported to fill another main tank in the POONDI and excess water would be transferred to the fifth tank.
