Construction work for new buildings of the City Primary Health Center (UPHC) on the Marundho Kothalam road in Nagapattinam finally began after the demolition of old and damaged structures last week. This comes after several representations of the population and civic groups.
Two years ago, UPHC was temporarily moved to the medical and wellness center on Pazha Street in the department 30 after the old building was declared dangerous. Temporary placement – located on a narrow and overloaded section – met with criticism for stagnation of water and poor road condition, which caused the facilities to reach the equipment for patients.
Although the Crore was sanctioned, demolition and reconstruction work in the National Health Mission, they faced a significant delay. The lack of progress has evoked several appeal from the population, civil society organizations and political representatives who urged the authorities to speed up work.
K. Ornadesan, the City Secretary of CPI (M), said it was the only UPHC serving the city of Nagapattinam. “The delay has caused great difficulties to the public. The construction must be completed first without apologies,” he said.
Medical Department officials said the construction was now underway and is expected to be completed within six months.
