The White House confirmed that the idea of a direct meeting between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin was opened by Moscow. On Wednesday 6th August, the White House printing secretary of Karoline Leitt told reporters that the proposal followed at a long meeting in Moscow between Putin and the American special envoy Steve Witkoff.
“The Russians expressed their desire to meet President Trump, and the president is open to meeting President Putin and President Zelenky,” Leavtt said.
While the statement signaled the growing diplomatic dynamics, Leavitt did not comment on when or where potential meetings could occur.
The meeting is not planned yet
An unnamed White House official told Associated Press that no date or place was completed. The official who spoke on the condition of anonymity stated that planning remained in the early stages.
If the meeting took place, it would mean Trump’s first face to face with Putin since returning to the office in January and an important milestone in the ongoing three -year war in Ukraine.
Putin-Witkoff interviews in Moscow
The Kremlin confirmed that Putin organized a three -hour meeting with Steve Witkoff on Wednesday, Trump’s special envoy. The discussion came just days before the deadline of Friday set by the White House for Russia to agree with the peace agreement or to face extended economic sanctions, including secondary sanctions focused on nations that continue to buy Russian oil.
“Everyone agrees that this war must be concluded,” Trump published on Truth Social. “And we will work on it in the coming days and weeks.”
Green urges caution
Trump, who repeatedly undertook to end the war on the “first day” of his second term of office, spoke with Putin several times by telephone since January. In February and again during the funeral of Pope Francis in April, he also met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelsky in the White House.
Trump acknowledged On Wednesday he spoke to European leaders after describing as a “highly productive” meeting between Witkoff and Putin.
He said he had a phone call with Trump After the Moscow meeting and that European leaders joined the conversation.
“It seems that Russia is now more inclined to agree to the ceasefire,” he said Zelena, adding that “pressure on Moscow works.”
But he warned against satisfaction.
“It is important to make sure that Russia or the United States will not deceive us in terms of potential agreements,” he said Zlensky.
The deadline of sanctions
The US is expected to announce new sanctions against Russia on Friday if no meaningful progress is made to peace. Trump’s administration imposed a 10 -day deadline after stopped negotiations between Russia, Ukraine and Western allies.
The New York Times first announced the potential of a three -way summit between Trump, Putin and Zelenky. It was also reported that Trump informed the European leader about his intention to meet Putin first and then host the trilateral summit.
