The West Bengal Fire Brigade ordered the basement and two floors of Abhishek’s office to be evacuated

The row over Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee’s Camac Street office refuses to die down. A day after the Diamond Harbor MP’s office was vandalized by miscreants, the West Bengal Fire Department on Friday (September 4, 2026) ordered the basement and two floors of a high-rise building to be cleared.

“It may be mentioned that the renewal of Fire Safety Certificate (RFSC) for occupants of 2B+G+7 Storey Building at Premises No. 9, Abanindranath Tagore Sarani (Camac Street). valid for a period of three years, which has expired. In the said RFSC, it has been clearly advised to renew the same before expiry,” the state fire department’s order said. The order mandated said occupancy until and unless fire precautions were met and an RFSC was obtained.

Copies of the order have been sent to the Municipal Corporation of Kolkata, Superintendent of Police Shakespeare Sarani and CESC to take necessary action. On Monday, a joint team of police officers and firefighters inspected the fire safety measures in the upstairs building. On Thursday, the premises were vandalized and six people were arrested for violence.

The premises at 9 Camac Street, Kolkata have been occupied by Abhishek Banerjee for the past few years. Kolkata Police personnel and Trinamool Congress leaders were involved in a scuffle on 27 August over the removal of a party hoarding in the building.

The police have registered an FIR in connection with the incident and have questioned senior Trinamool leaders. Abhishek Banerjee and Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’ Brien have also been summoned by the Kolkata Police in connection with the incident.

After the Trinamool Congress’s defeat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Abhishek Banerjee’s Amtala office in his constituency was also targeted. The Calcutta High Court ordered the status quo of the administration’s attempts to demolish the Trinamool leader’s office in Amtala.

The Trinamool Congress leadership, including former chief minister Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee, described these attempts to attack, demolish and clear party offices as “political revenge” by the Bharatiya Janata Party government.
