Four candidates of the Welfare Party of India (WPI), a political party backed by the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, registered an impressive victory in Mukkom municipality without forging any alliance with the main political fronts when the results of local body elections in Kozhikode district were declared on Saturday.
This is significant because the alleged merger of the United Democratic Front (UDF) with the WPI was among the major issues raised by the Left Democratic Front (LDF) during the election campaign. However, in Mukkom municipality, the WPI fought in six constituencies on its own after “alliance talks” with the UDF failed due to certain local political pressures.
In the 34-member municipal council, the WPI has fielded its candidates in Kallurutty North, Kanakkuparamba, Mangalassery, Chennamangalur, Pulpparamba and Pottassery wards. They won from Kanakkuparamba, Mangalassera, Chennamangalur and Pulpparamba.
The winners are Mohammed Naseem, Shafeeque Madayi, V. Banooja and Jaseela Azeez (independent supported by WPI). In the 2020 polls, the party contested from four constituencies and won from Kanakkuparamba, Mangalassery and Pulpparamba constituencies in an “alliance” with the UDF.
