The woman and her teenage daughter were brutally attacked in daylight for alleged vegetable theft in Gujarat’s Surrat.
The shocking incident occurred on Thursday in the market market with the market for agricultural products (APMC), one of the busiest wholesale markets in the city.
Since then, a video about the attack has become viral on social media, provokes public outrage and raises serious concerns about the growing culture of alert justice and public apathy.
The video shows a man who is assumed to be a guardian and hold a stick. You can see a woman’s hair and pulls her across the road, screaming all the time and begging for help. Meanwhile, two more men are seen who attack her daughter – they release her hair, push her to the ground, hit her and dig into her stomach.
Despite the violent nature of the attack, the video also shows several passers -by countries idle and watches the incident without entering to help or stop the attackers.
Brutal shots quickly got into the social media, especially on X, where thousands expressed their anger.
“It was disgusting that it happened in Gujarat,” one user said.
Others commented in Hindi: “Is there any country for the poor? Penalty for banks will run away with millions of Cores and the poor!” (Isn’t it a country for the poor? A rich escape with billions from banks, but the poor are punished!).
One more person wrote: “Humanity died in Surrat from within people” (humanity died inside people in Surrat).
In response to the growing outrage of the Surrat Police, Surrat confirmed the incident and authenticity of the video through a post to their official X -account.
The police arrested two of the attackers and said that further investigation was going. Authorities are working on verifying the claims for theft and identifying other individuals involved in the attack.
This incident ruled the nationwide debates on the justice of the crowd, discrimination based on the class and the alarming indifference of the public when they witnessed violence. Both activists and citizens demand strict legal steps and better protection of vulnerable protection to prevent such attacks in the future.
