With the United Democratic Front (UDF) retaining control of Thrikkakara municipality in the local body elections, attention has now turned to possible leadership changes. According to party sources, two councilors are actively being considered for the post of chairman. Although the purpose will be decided by the party after the swearing-in ceremony, Rashid Ullampilly and Shaji Vazhakkala have emerged as the main contenders for the post of chairman.
The UDF not only retained its control but won with a clear majority of 27 out of 48 seats, putting itself in a comfortable position to form an administration without the help of independents. While during the last two terms (two Independents in 2015 and one in 2020) the UDF had to rely on independent councillors, this time it has the upper hand.
Mr. Ullampilly previously served as the Chairman of the Thrikkakara Municipality Standing Committee on Health from 2020 to 2023. He relinquished the post when he became the Party Block Chairman. He was the Councilor of Ward Number 27, Quarters NGO. Mr Ullampilly won from ward number 22, TV centre.

Mr. Vazhakkala was the chairman of the municipality in the period 2010-2015. He is elected for a third term as a councillor.
Meanwhile, the position of vice-chairman is most likely to go to a leading partner, the Muslim League of Indian Union. Shereena Shukoor, who previously served as Deputy Chairperson of the Municipality between 2010-2015, may be considered for the post. She was earlier elected from Vazhakkala East ward.
This time Ms. Shukoor from Mythreepuram division, ward number 39, a newly formed ward, won.
