Kinshasa (Reuters) -A United States promotes rapid progress in peace negotiations between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), with the head of the American diplomat underlines the “extreme aggressive time plan” as early as June or July.
Troy Fitrell, the main official of the US Africa Office, said during the online conference this week that the technical teams were trying to move this process forward.
“We have technical teams here next week to try to get to the next stage,” Fitrell said. “We have made these principles. We have now argued about the introduction of these principles.
“There’s no sense about that.
The planned meeting in May between Foreign Ministers Rwanda and DRC did not occur, which emphasized the continuing tension and fragility of the peace process.
In a separate but parallel mediation effort in Doha, delegations of the Congolese Government and M23 Group Rebel were referred to further interviews after consultations this week, sources from both sides of Reuters said.
The process led by Qatar is considered to be an additional footprint aimed at resolving an armed conflict in the Eastern Congo, where the M23 insurgents have confiscated the territory in recent months.
Despite regional and international efforts, there is mistrust between Kinshasa and Kigali Hluboká. DRC accuses Rwanda of support M23, denies the accusation of Rwanda.
The US played a growing role in trying to bridge differences, but diplomats carefully that achieving permanent settlement will require political will from all sides.
