The UP minister’s response sought “irregularities” in income, assets
The Deputy Lokayukta of Uttar Pradesh has asked state minister Somendry Tomar and his wife to respond to a complaint alleging irregularities in their declared income and assets.
Petitioner Amitabh Thakur, a Lucknow-based social activist, said on Sunday, “Based on the affidavits filed during the 2017 and 2022 UP Assembly elections, the couple’s total declared income during that period was around ₹ 72 lakh, while the total increase in their movable and immovable assets appeared to be around 2 annepartial, I.1 high-level inquiry into the sources and reasons for this alleged discrepancy Deputy Lokayukta from UP asked the minister and his wife.
Mr. Thakur also called for an inquiry into Mr. Tomar’s role as chairman of the Shanti Niketan Trust and the purchase of the trust’s land of approximately 47,000 sq. m. and worth ₹10.5 million in Kayasth Mavandi village between January 2023 and April 2025.
“I have lodged a formal complaint with the UP Lokayukta against Somendra Tomar – MLA from Meerut South and Minister for Power – and his wife. I have informed them that their assets have tripled compared to their income between 2017 and 2022. According to the affidavits filed by Somendra Tomar for the period 2017 and 202, his total income recorded in the Uttarde Assembly elections in 2027. ₹ 43 lakh, while his wife’s total income was ₹ 29 lakh, so their total income for the period stands at ₹ 72 lakh 2.13 crore – an amount that appears to be roughly three times their total income,” Mr Thakur, a 1992-batch retired Indian Police (IPS) officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, told The Hindu.
Mr. Thakur also pointed out in his petition that facts had emerged regarding the acquisition of significant assets over the past few years by trusts linked to Mr. Tomar — namely Shanti Niketan Trust, Vinayak Educational Trust, Neelkanth Educational Trust and Sai Educational Trust — and also demanded a probe into the matter.
