
Students at the University of South Carolina received a warning about a possible active shooter near the library in the main campus in Columbia, Associated Press reported.
However, school officials soon stated that there was no evidence of the shooter. They informed that the search continued and also recommended students to hide on the spot.
There were no immediate reports of the shot.
The school sent the original warning shortly after 18:45 to order students to evacuate the area near the Thomas Cooper library, looking for shelter and if necessary.
The alert described the suspect from a white man, approximately 6 feet (1.8 meters) tall, wearing black pants.
“Defeat if you encounter a suspect,” the warning said. “Listen to public security orders,” he added.
The warning did not confirm that there was a shooting.
This was followed by another warning that there was no evidence of an active shooter “at the moment. The police are looking for affected buildings.
Approximately 38,000 students attend a school in the heart of the city, which is home to nearly 145,000 people.
