The Washington Post reported on Friday that security officials in the UK have ordered Apple to create a so-called “backdoor” that allows them to retrieve all content uploaded to the cloud by all Apple users around the world.
iPhone manufacturers may stop providing encrypted storage space in the UK rather than breaking promises of security assurances provided by users everywhere, the report said.
Apple did not respond to Reuters’ request for comment outside of regular business hours.
The UK Home Secretary’s Office has provided Apple with documents called “Technical Capabilities Notice” and provides access under the Washington Post order.
A Home Office spokesperson said: “We do not comment on operational issues, including confirming or denying the existence of any such notice.”
In January, the UK used its regulatory power to investigate Apple and Google’s smartphone operating systems, app stores and browsers.
