The coastal road connecting Koyilandy port with Kollam Angadi has become a reality with the completion of two small bridges over Cheriyathodu and Koothavallythodu (canals). The road will provide fishermen from Kollam, Arayankavu and Gurukulam beaches direct access to Koyilandy port without having to use the state highway.

The bridges were constructed at a cost of ₹ 1.16 crore using funds from the Harbor Engineering Department. The project was executed under the supervision of the Harbor Engineering Sub-Division Office, Koyilandy. The concrete roadway was laid in consideration of the coastline’s vulnerability to sea erosion and tides.

The coastal route runs from Kollam beach via Kollam beach, Arayankavu, Koothavally, Gurukulam beach, Valiyakath Palli and Mayan beach to Koyilandy port.

Officials said the road would benefit the fishing communities of Kollam, Arayankavu and Gurukulam Beach by facilitating access to the port. It would also serve as an alternative route for small vehicles when traffic between Kollam and Koyilandy is disrupted and offer another travel option for people in the coastal belt.

From Koyilandy Port, motorists can proceed towards Kappad and Kattilapeedika along the coast. However, the entire coastal section beyond the harbor is yet to become fully motorable.

The road between the port and Ezhukudikkal has been reconstructed. However, the stretch from Ezhukudikkal to Kappad remains in poor condition and sections are damaged by sea erosion, making travel difficult.

The project was implemented as part of the state government’s initiative to modernize coastal roads.
