Tamil Nadu Congress Commission (TNCC) president K. Selvaperunthagai is in talks with actor Vijay’s Tamilaga vettri kazhagam (TVK) to form an alliance for the 2026 assembly elections.
Talking to reporters at the Madurai airport on Sunday, he said that the TNCC had not received any instruction from the party’s central leadership to engage in talks with TVK. “We are firmly with the DMK and the INDIA bloc,” he said.
The Congress had never made any announcement about the alliance with TVK and some people were speculating about it, he said. “(If at all such a statement has to come), it should be from party leader Rahul Gandhi, national president Mallikarjun Kharge or AICC Tamil Nadu in-charge Girish Chodankar. The media should not spread such speculations,” he said.
Asked on TVK, which is organizing a nationwide protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, he said the TNCC will support any party that opposes the exercise. The Congress fully supports Chief Minister MK Stalin’s stand on SIR, he said.
When the new Mekedatu dam proposed by the Karnataka government across the Cauvery caught his attention, Mr. Selvaperunthagai said that not a single brick could be placed without the permission of the Supreme Court and the approval of the Tamil Nadu government.
