The District Collector Arjun Pandian issued a strict warning that against the National Motorway Office in India (Nhai) and suppliers, if an accident occurs, there will be a failure in implementing reasonable security measures.
The collector made this statement at the district road safety meeting here on Friday, when the department of motor vehicles (MVD) stressed that construction work along the national highway was carried out in violation of the safety protocols. MVD noted that, despite repeated directives at earlier meetings, no measures were taken to correct the problems.
The collector ordered the officials to deliver a formal notice both to the supplier and the Nhai, and their responsibility for any accident resulting from the security impacts during construction.
The meeting also dealt with other key concerns about road safety. The instructions were given to remove all unauthorized boards, banners and arches placed on the roads.
Officials marked the poor condition of several sidewalks in the district, with many covered with overgrowth or damaged plates. The collector ordered the authorities to clean the vegetation to walk the sidewalks and replace the broken plates.
