The Telangana transport department has warned of strict action against school and college buses violating safety norms
Ahead of the reopening of schools in Telangana, the transport department on Wednesday announced a special enforcement drive under which educational institution buses (EIBs) will be checked for valid documents.
According to the ministry, it is mandatory for the EIB to have a valid certificate of eligibility. They should also meet all prescribed safety standards before being allowed to operate.
The drive will focus on checking vehicles that drive without a certificate of competency, transport students beyond the permitted seating capacity and do not meet safety standards. Buses will also be inspected for pollution under control (PUC) certificates and proof of insurance.
The ministry said checks should further cover the availability of first-aid kits, fire extinguishers and emergency exits, along with the condition of brakes, tyres, lights and other mechanical components. The authorities would also verify whether conductors have been appointed in the vehicles to ensure the safety of the students.
The ministry has warned that vehicles will be impounded if they are found to be operating without a valid certificate of competency or carrying more students than prescribed. Cases would be filed against vehicle owners, drivers and management of educational institutions under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.
The department emphasized that the responsibility for vehicle maintenance and compliance with safety standards rests with the school and college management. Parents were also urged not to send children in overloaded vehicles and to check the suitability and safety of the vehicles carrying their children.
