The Telangana Cabinet will meet on May 23 to draw up a checklist and plans for the future
The Telangana cabinet meeting scheduled for Saturday (May 23) is expected to clear several major programs and policy initiatives that the state government plans to formally announce during the state’s Foundation Day celebrations on June 2.
The meeting assumes significance as the ruling dispensation steps up efforts to consolidate its position ahead of the next elections. Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy will chair the meeting, which is likely to focus on welfare schemes, infrastructure expansion, fiscal management and administrative reforms.
The meeting is likely to reflect concerns over the unfolding crisis in West Asia and its possible impact on Telangana’s economy and revenue generation. Ministers are expected to discuss the need for austerity measures in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for fiscal prudence amid global uncertainty.
Key agenda items include the second phase of the government’s flagship Indiramma Houses scheme, which will be launched from June 2. The government is banking on this program to create a positive atmosphere in rural areas.
The cabinet is also likely to deal with issues related to public procurement, which have recently emerged as a major point of criticism from opposition parties. Concerns about delays and operational hurdles in procurement are expected to be scrutinized at the meeting.
The Private School Fees Regulation and Monitoring Commission, which aims to bring transparency and accountability to the fee structure of private educational institutions, is also expected to come up for discussion. The Cabinet will also review the proposed expansion of the Metro Rail network, which the Center seems keen to help, while progress on talks with Maharashtra over the Tummidihatti project will also be on the agenda.
Ahead of the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and ministers are scheduled to be in the temple town of Yadagirigutta on Saturday morning to inaugurate a Vedic school.
