England captain Harry Brook believes a 300-run total could become a reality at the 2026 T20 World Cup, citing Indian conditions as a major factor. In the pre-tournament captains’ press conference, Brook said there are few places in India where such scores can be made.
England are one of only two full-fledged nations to surpass the 300-run mark in T20 cricket. They smashed 304 against South Africa at the start of 2025. The only other side to break that barrier remains Zimbabwe, who amassed 344 against Gambia in 2024, the highest ever in the format.
Brook pointed to fast outfields and shorter boundaries as a dangerous combination for bowlers.
“There are a lot of grounds in India where the score could be 300 and over,” Brook said on Thursday.
“The wickets are looking really good at the moment – quick overs and fairly short boundaries. You just have to go out there and be fearless, not worry too much about getting out and keep trying to overpower the bowlers.”
WHY THEY ARE BECOMING COMMON LARGE SUMS
Massive scores are becoming more common in T20 cricket, fueled by flatter pitches, improved batting technology and more aggressive batting.
At the same media briefing, South Africa captain Aiden Markram explained that batsmen are now thinking differently when building innings. Instead of targeting overs, they focus on specific groups of deliveries.
“The game is moving fast these days,” Markram said.
“We’ve probably got to a stage where you’re not looking at winning overs, you’re looking at small groups of balls. A bunch of good balls together makes a big difference, so you feel sorry for the bowlers.”

Acknowledging the challenge for bowlers, Brook and Markram stressed the importance of calm leadership during high-scoring phases.
“You have to keep your cool as much as you can,” Brook said.
“Try to slow the game down at certain times and speed it up when you’re on top. Most importantly, you have to stay calm and help your pitchers stay calm as well.”
HOW TO STOP A TOTAL OF 200 RUNS?
Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan offered a bowler’s perspective and said that mindset remains essential even in conditions that are favorable to the batsmen.
“As a bowler, you can’t think about teams scoring 200 or 300 runs and let that play in your mind,” Rashid said.
“If you accept it, it will happen. I never accept that a team will get 200 goals. You always come with the idea of limiting them to the lowest possible level.”
“If you have the energy that 250 or 300 is normal, believe me, it will happen. This is where experience comes in – when the conditions don’t go your way, you have to bring your skills into play,” added Rashid.
The T20 World Cup begins on February 7, with teams divided into four groups of five. The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super 8 stage, followed by the semi-finals. The final is scheduled for March 8.
