The Syro-Malabar Public Affairs Commission has said that the misuse of the provisions of the anti-conversion laws implemented in various states is unconstitutional.
He cited a case registered by the police in Uttar Pradesh’s Sultanpur district against several Christians, accusing them of forced religious conversion and allegedly distributing Bibles.
The action taken by the police and the claim of the plaintiff drew criticism from the Allahabad High Court, according to a statement issued here. The commission said the court found that there was no evidence of conversion as alleged. She welcomed the intervention of the courts to ensure religious freedom and protect the rights of minorities.
The commission said governments must ensure religious freedom and minority rights as guaranteed in the constitution.
