The National Institute of Engineering (NIE), Mysuru, on Friday organized a one-day symposium on ‘A Vision of Sustainable Development for Greater Mysuru’, which brought together experts and stakeholders to discuss the future growth of the city and the need for a scientific model of sustainable development.
Actor, director and theater personality Prakash Belawadi, who inaugurated the symposium, set the tone for the discussions by calling for constructive dialogue and practical recommendations to guide the government in shaping Mysuru into a ‘Greater Mysuru’.
He said the vision of ‘Susthira Mysuru’ (Sustainable Mysuru) should be based on a scientific and predictable development model that is free from political influence and could serve as an example of sustainable urban development for other cities in the country.
Speakers at the symposium noted that while development is often seen as invisible to citizens, modern technology can accurately track and measure it. “The eye in the sky — the satellites — sees it all,” they noted, noting that satellite imagery, along with ground data, historical records and artificial intelligence, can help guide long-term city planning.
Participants highlighted the need to create a data repository that can be accessed by stakeholders such as planners, researchers, institutions and citizens to support informed decision-making.
Experts also emphasized that the development of a futuristic city requires data-driven decision-making, integrated and connected urban systems and a citizen-centric approach. According to them, artificial intelligence can play an important role in saving energy, efficient water management and reducing waste.
Key elements identified as essential to building a sustainable Greater Mysuru included clean air, lake conservation, development of green streets, promotion of organic food, solar institutions, deployment of micro-grids, use of biodiesel and rainwater harvesting.
During a panel discussion and audience interaction, speakers emphasized the importance of incorporating public opinion into planning processes.
