The Supreme Court of India ordered the formulation of a mandate to develop a mechanism to bring transparency and accountability in the structure, governance and functioning of Bar Associations across the country.

The bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Satish Chandra Sharma asked advocate Vipin Nair, legal counsel for the nodals in the suo motu reference titled “Re: Strengthening and Enhancing the Institutional Strength of Bar Associations” to circulate the proposed terms of reference to the Chief Secretaries of the State High Courts for further circulation among the Bar Associations. Senior Advocate K. Parameshwar is amicus curiae in the case.

The court said it will consider the suggestions received from the bar authorities across the country and finalize the terms of reference and issue relevant directions.

The court settled the case after eight weeks.

The Supreme Court suo motu registered the case as part of an important institutional exercise to improve the standards of advocacy and legal administration, which may in time translate into a pool of lawyers who would be in the zone of consideration for a Bench in constitutional courts.
